The number and character of interesting old buildings in and, in the case of Elston Towers, just outside the village made the need for a heritage trail an essential part of our application for Lottery funding. In addition the proximity of the Stoke (1487) battlefield within the parish called for a second trail taking visitors on a separate and longer route down to the River Trent. Whilst on a Pentagon trip to Lichfield, David Cook became inspired by a town walk leaflet for tourists which took the form of an aerial view with added text and pictures of the town. The proposal was therefore to produce a two sided trail guide with the shorter village trail on one side and the longer battle field trail on the other, both beginning at the Village Shop.
